Arthur Schmidt

Arthur P. Schmidt Sr., 80, of Rockport, died Wednesday at Salem Hospital,
following a long illness.
He was the husband of Rita B. (Wetmore) Schmidt, and was a former
resident of Boston and Winchester.
He was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, to the late Arthur E. and Lenore
(Kraeuter) Schmidt. He received his undergraduate degrees from Kenyon
College in Ohio and was a graduate of Harvard Law School, class of 1941. Mr.
Schmidt served with the U.S. Army during World War II with the 20th
Infantry, 6th Division. He served in New Guinea and the Philippines.
Prior to his retirement in 1988, Mr. Schmidt was a senior partner with
the law firm of Gaston, Snow, Hunt, Rice and Boyd, specializing in the areas
of corporate and real estate law. He was a member of the Church of
Advent in Boston and was a member of the Corporation, as well as serving in
many other capacities in the church.
He enjoyed sailing and the arts, and was a member of the Sandy Bay Yacht
Club of Rockport and the Harvard Club. He was also very active with the
Samaritans and belonged to the American Bar Association and the Boston Bar
Association.
He is survived by his wife, Rita, of Rockport; two sons, Mark B. of
Ipswich and Arthur E. Jr. and his wife Aurora Camacho de Schmidt, of
Swarthmore, PA; three granddaughters, Alicia Schmidt Camacho and her
husband, Stephen Pitti, Genevieve Schmidt Camacho and Allison Schmidt.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, at 1 p.m., at the Church of the
Advent, 30 Brimmer St., Boston.
