November 14, 2017
Barbara Bridges-Elliott, 88, of Gloucester, wife of the late Earl L.
Elliott, passed away peacefully at her residence on Tuesday, November 14, 2017.
Barbara was born in Concord, NH on August 14, 1929, the daughter of the late
Harold G. and Irene (Saidel) Vitagliano. She cherished her New Hampshire
roots even after leaving to attend Westbrook College in Maine. Also from
Concord was her beloved first husband David C. Bridges (son of the late U.S.
Senator H. Styles Bridges). Barbara and David lived in Beverly Farms where
they raised their family. Barbara worked at the Country Store and enjoyed
spending summers at West Beach and boating with family and friends along the
New England coast. She loved spending time outdoors and was an avid tennis
player and accomplished skier, which she enjoyed into her early 80's.
Following the death of her first husband, Barbara married Earl L. Elliott
from Ipswich and they settled at the Old Yacht Club on Rocky Neck in 1974.
In later years Barbara embraced the camaraderie of sailing with friends at
the Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport and enjoyed attending the music theatre
with cousins Carole Carlson and Sarah Fitzpatrick.
Barbara loved adventure, travel and making new acquaintances, whether she
was skiing the Alps, trekking an African safari, or sailing the Caribbean.
In more recent years she was most happy closer to home where she never
missed an opportunity to socialize . . . meeting friends for exercise class
and coffee at the MAC, or opening her front door to chat with passersby
about her spectacular view and sunsets over Ten Pound Island.
She is survived by her sons, Jeffrey C. Bridges and his wife Janet of
Gloucester, Stephen H. Bridges and his former wife Dicsee Bell of
Gloucester. Beloved granddaughters Sally and Anna Bridges, Georgia Dominick
and husband Drew and two great grandchildren Andrew and Lula Dominick. She
also leaves behind several nieces, nephews cousins and was pre-deceased by
her brother H. Douglas Vitagliano of Ellicott City, MD.
In keeping with her wishes, services and burial will be held privately. A
celebration of life for family and friends will be announced at a later
date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to: Cape
Ann Animal Aid, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930. Online condolences may be
given at: www.greelyfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are by the Greely Funeral
Home, 212 Washington St. Gloucester.
