Gloucester - Charlotte Jane Andrews, beloved spouse of Susan Tefft
Nicholson, died at her home on Rowley Shore, Gloucester, on August 28, 2020.
She was 91. Charlotte, daughter of Charles P. and Elsie M. Andrews, was born
on March 23, 1929, in Watertown (Oakville), Connecticut.
Charlotte graduated from Watertown High School in 1947. After attending
Schauffler College in Cleveland, Ohio, she graduated from The Ohio State
University in 1951 with a BSc in Social Administration.
Charlotte was an adventurous person. As a young woman of 22, she left her
home on a freighter to go to Teheran, Iran, stopping enroute in Beirut,
Lebanon, a city she fell in love with. She spent a year in Iran, where she
taught English as a Second Language at the American Language Center. At the
age of 81, she returned to Beirut with her partner, Susan, who was auditing
a course at the American University of Beirut.
After Iran, Charlotte returned to the U.S. to begin a career in social work
in Waterbury, Connecticut and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her favorite job was
as director of international program at the YWCA of Pittsburgh.
In mid-life Charlotte developed an interest in Anthropology, receiving an MA
in Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh, and a Ph.D at Southern
Illinois University. In 1974, Charlotte spent a year doing anthropological
field research in Meknes, Morocco, where she also taught English as a Second
Language at the American Language Center. Several years later, she returned
to Morocco with Susan, where both taught English as a Second Language at the
American Language Center of Rabat.
Charlotte taught anthropology at the University of Maine, Portland before
moving to Cape Ann in 1980, where she taught part time at Regis College,
retiring in 1993.
Charlotte was very interested in different cultures and in bringing people
of difference together. Over the course of her life, for professional or
personal reasons, Charlotte visited 31 countries, and loved to share
reminiscences of her experiences.
Charlotte was a Photography member of The Rockport Art Association.
She is survived by her nieces, Charlaine Andrulot and husband Bill, Heidi
Klies and husband Peter, and Tami Johnson Andrews; her nephews, Dwight
Andrews and wife Carol, Chuck Andrews and wife Amy, Warren Andrews and wife
Judy; grandnieces and grandnephews, Amy Martelly, Tia Andrews, Meghan
Andrews and husband Stephen Irwin, Jill Ross and husband Jeremy, Kathy
DePalo-Gould, Billy Andrulot and wife Pamela, and Marc Andrulot; cousins,
Judy Bouchez, Eileen Clement, Kathy Watt, Kristina Martin, and Martha Watt;
great- and great-great-grandnieces and nephew, Nandu Madireddi, son of her
late beloved friend Boona Rao; and by her loving partner of over 50 years,
Susan.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Contributions in her memory
may be made to the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, or Americans
for Middle East Understanding, New York, New York.
