Courtenay Worthington

June 5, 2002

Courtenay Pope Worthington, 98, of Phillips Avenue, Rockport, died today. He was the husband of the late Margaret Brown Worthington.

He was born in Dedham on January 19, 1904, to the late Alvan and Olive (Pope) Worthington.

He graduated from MIT in 1925 with a degree in civil engineering. He met his wife while with the Corps of Engineering in Louisville, KY. They lived in Dedham, where he was active with St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was also president of the Dedham Historical Society.

They began to spend the summer in Rockport in 1940, in what was originally the home of his great-aunt, Gertrude Clerk. They moved there year-round in 1976.

Mr. Worthington was an avid birder all his life. He particularly enjoyed birding activities with his late friend, Russell Norris.

He was active at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, the Sandy Bay Historical Society, AARP, the Rights of Way Committee and the Andrews Point Association.

He is survived by a son, Courtenay Pope Worthington Jr. of Madrid, Spain, and Veysonnez, Switzerland: two daughters, Jean Childs of Wellesley and Betsy Linsenmayer of Rockport; eight grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
