Courtenay Worthington

Courtenay Pope Worthington, 98, of Phillips Avenue, Rockport, died today. He was
the husband of the late Margaret Brown Worthington.
He was born in Dedham on January 19, 1904, to the late Alvan and Olive (Pope)
Worthington.
He graduated from MIT in 1925 with a degree in civil engineering. He met his
wife while with the Corps of Engineering in Louisville, KY. They lived in
Dedham, where he was active with St. Paul's Episcopal
Church. He was also president of the Dedham Historical Society.
They began to spend the summer in Rockport in 1940, in what was originally the
home of his great-aunt, Gertrude Clerk. They moved there year-round in 1976.
Mr. Worthington was an avid birder all his life. He particularly enjoyed birding
activities with his late friend, Russell Norris.
He was active at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, the Sandy Bay Historical Society,
AARP, the Rights of Way Committee and the Andrews Point Association.
He is survived by a son, Courtenay Pope Worthington Jr. of Madrid, Spain, and
Veysonnez, Switzerland: two daughters, Jean Childs of Wellesley and Betsy
Linsenmayer of Rockport; eight grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.
