Richard E. Fahrenz, 70

— Richard “Dick” Fahrenz, partner of Elizabeth “Susie” Kinder, passed away
after a year-long struggle with ALS on Sunday, September 2, at his home in
Manchester-by-the-Sea. Born in Binghamton, NY, on December 20, 1941, to Anna
Ferchir and Earl Richard Fahrenz, Dick graduated from Binghamton Central
High School, The Ohio State University, and University of Connecticut Law
School. He worked as an attorney for all of his professional life in
Binghamton, NY, initially with the firm of Waite, Berry and Reiter; as a
founding partner in Smyk, Smyk, and Fahrenz; and most recently with Hinman,
Howard and Kattell, LLP. For many years Dick and his family spent summers in
Dick was an active member and a former President of the Binghamton Rotary
Club, served as Chairman of the Binghamton Planning Commission and was a
member of the Binghamton Club. He was an avid sports fan and supporter of
the Binghamton Mets, the New York Yankees, and the Chicago Cubs. Dick also
coached youth softball teams while his three daughters were growing up and
continued to participate in amateur softball, basketball and bowling leagues
until shortly before his retirement.
Dick retired in 2011 and moved to Manchester, where he was active in the
Mystery Book Club at the Manchester Library and the Bullseye Fleet of the
Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport. Dick is survived by his three daughters,
Cynthia Riley of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, Laura Fahrenz, of East
Harwich, Kristen Hilley, of Brewster; his two year old granddaughter,
Madelyn Hilley; and his West Highland White terrier, Holly.
Dick will be remembered for his wry sense of humor, kind and compassionate
demeanor and his nobility throughout his battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
He will be greatly missed by his family, colleagues, and friends.
Fahrenz family will host a Celebration of Life for friends, family and
colleagues at The Binghamton Club on Friday, September 14th, from 6:30
p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Additionally, A Celebration of Dick's Life will be held
at the Crowell Chapel in Manchester, MA on October 6th, 2012 at 11:00
a.m. with a reception to follow at Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport, MA.
