Ernest A. Phillips

PHILLIPS, Ernest A. Jr. Of Winchester and Rockport, Massachusetts passed away on October 14, 2012 at the age of 96. Beloved husband of 60 years to the late Priscilla C. Phillips; loving father of Ernest A. III and Patricia Phillips of North Conway, NH, Judith and James Morrison of North Reading, Martha and Michael Dupuis of Reading, and the late Craig Phillips; respected grandfather of 7 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Ernie was born in Boston, MA. He attended Dorchester High School for Boys and Bryant & Straton College. During World War II, he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps for whom he flew 63 overseas missions. For his service, he was awarded 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 16 Air Medals, 3 Campaign Stars, the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon, the South Pacific Campaign Ribbon, and the American Theater Campaign Ribbon as a flight leader flying B-24 Liberators. After WWII Ernie rejoined Ryerson Steel Co. of Boston, where he worked for 42 years until his retirement. During his 50 years as a resident of Winchester, Ernie served on many town boards, including the Winchester Finance Committee, the Town Water & Sewer Board, and the Winchester Public Library Board. He was an avid reader and was particularly proud of his work with the library board during its 1995-96 renovation. A summer resident of Rockport for 50 years, Ernie was a member of the Sandy Bay Yacht Club where his boat White Caps is still moored. After his time as a pilot, Ernie delighted in all things navigation, be it by air or by sea. Ernie was a humble man, a dedicated father, and a sincere friend. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Visiting hours will be held at Lane Funeral Home 760 Main St., WINCHESTER on Thursday Oct 25th from 4 to 7 pm. Funeral services will be held at the Parish of the Epiphany Church, 70 Church St., Winchester on Friday Oct 26th at 11 am; interment will take place at Wildwood Cemetery in Winchester.
