December 14, 2009
Gilbert H. Crane, a long-time resident of
Belmont, following months of general decline died at home on Dec 14,
2009, months after his 100th birthday. He was born in Carbonear,
Newfoundland, Canada and emigrated as a young man to the United States
where he met and married Lillian Violet Herald whose mother and father
had also come from Newfoundland. Lillian predeceased him on April 1,
1992. Mr. Crane had commercially fished for cod off the Grand Banks as
a young teenager and had a life long passion for the sea. He enjoyed
boating in the Cape Ann area where he and his family summered for many
years. He belonged to the Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport, however,
he kept his boats in Smith's Cove, Gloucester, because he thought it a
safer harbor. He is survived by his daughter Carol and son-in-law
Dwain Smith of Lynnfield, three grand children, Alison Bentley of
Chelmsford, MA, Jennifer James of Coeur d'alene, Idaho and Adam Smith
of Lynnfield, MA and also five great grand children; Joshua James,
Mathew James, Thomas Bentley, Julia Bentley, and Kirk Smith. Private
burial services were held and interment was at Puritan Lawn Memorial
Cemetery in Peabody, MA. Arrangements were handled by Brown & Hickey
Funeral Home of Belmont. Memorial donations may be made to VNA
Hospice, 100 Sylvan Road, G-500, Woburn, MA or the Sandy Bay Yacht
