J. Harry Mills, 92, town moderator, banker

ROCKPORT - J. Harry Mills, 92, husband of Louise H. (Hull) Mills, of 207 Main St., died on Saturday morning at Den Mar Nursing Home in Rockport.

He was born in Rockport, on Dec. 31, 1899, to the late Charles F. and Martha G. (Dennis) Mills.

Mr. Mills attended Rockport and Gloucester schools and was a graduate of Gloucester High School, class of 1916.

He began his career as a purchasing agent fox Lovell & Covel (now Neeco Candy Company) in Boston and Cambridge in the 1920's.

In 1930, he became Town Treasurer for the Town of Rockport and continued in that capacity for eight years.

In 1938, Mr. Mills was named treasurer of the Granite Savings Bank and retired in 1965 as Vice-President and Treasurer.

He was a veteran of World War I having served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Mills served the Town of Rockport as town moderator from 1943 to 1963 and was chairman of the Rationing Program during World War II.

He was a charter member, past president and Paul Harris Fellow of the Rockport Rotary Club, a charter member of the Sandy Bay Yacht Club and a charter member of the Edward Peterson Post No. 98, Rockport American Legion.

Mr. Mills was a member and Past Master of Ashler Lodge A.F. & A.M., and a Past District Deputy Grand Master.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Janice M., wife of Peter W. Beacham of Rockport; two grandchildren, Peter W. Beacham Jr. and Debra M. Bloomingdale; two sisters, Katherine Law of Burlington, Vt. and Dorothy Reddy of Rockport; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by three brothers, Claude Mills, Charles Mills and Ernest Mills and two sisters, Marjorie Tarr and Eleanor Wiberg.

Funeral services will be held in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Broadway, Rockport, tomorrow morning at 11.

The Rev. Richard A. Bamforth, rector, will officiate. Private burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery. There will be no visiting hours.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in his memory to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, Burns Institute, 51 Blossom St., Boston, Mass., 02114.
