John Weston

Dr. John C. Weston, 77of Ocala, Florida formerly of Rockport and Chelsea Massachusetts passed away on October 9, 2014 in Ocala, Florida after a long illness. He was born on February 24, 1937 to Ralph Weston and Catherine (Canty) Weston in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Dr. Weston graduated with a degree in History from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA in 1958; and received his Masterís degree and PhD from Boston University. Dr. Weston taught History and later served as Department Chair at Boston State College in Massachusetts for twenty years. He subsequently moved to the Massachusetts Board of Regents of Higher Education as the Academic Program Officer and from that experience moved onto the position of Vice President of Academic Affairs for two colleges in the Boston area, Endicott College in Beverly MA and Newbury College in Brookline MA.

John was an avid sailor. He raced a Star Boat for most of his adult life and later moved to cruising with his wife, Barbara. He taught sailing to many of todayís sailors at the Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport and for years directed the Youth Sailing Program as well as the Adult Sailing Program in later years. He crewed in the Star Boat Olympic Trials in San Diego as well as the World Championships in Copenhagen in 1967. He served as Commodore of the Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport for five years.

John was active in Community Affairs both in Rockport and in Oak Run in Ocala. He was elected to the Rockport School Committee in 1965 and served for nine years as a member, three of those as Chairman; after that he continued his service to the students of Rockport as a member of the Cape Ann Regional School Study Committee for three more years.

He and his wife retired to Ocala, Florida in 2002 where he continued his community service as President of the Democratic Club and the Fishing Club in Oak Run. He later moved to Fore Ranch where he served a member of the Master Board. In addition he volunteered at Munroe Hospital and was a Member of the Municipal Arts Commission.

Along with his loving wife Barbara of 40 years, he is survived by two daughters, Catherine Hann, Elizabeth Bates and a son, John, two step-daughters Ann and Susan Weld as well as eight grandchildren, Christian, Elizabeth, Catherine, Caroline, James, Emma, Daniel and Grace.
