Leverett A. Martel

March 9, 2000

Leverett A. Martel, 82, husband of the late Harriet R. (Corcoran) Martel of 5 Poole's Terrace, Rockport, formerly of Winchester and Stoneham, died on Friday, March 9, at his residence surrounded by his family.

He was born in Hartford, Conn., on July 9, 1918, to the late Arthur L. and Frances E. (Brown) Martel.

Mr. Martel was a graduate of Bulkley High School in Hartford, class of 1937, and was also a graduate of Boston University, class of 1948, receiving his BS in business and MBA.

Mr. Martel was employed at Harvard University in the purchasing department from 1963 until he retired in 1983 and moved to Rockport.

He served in the National Guard (Mounted Calvary) from 1938 to 1941 and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II and saw action in the Southwest Pacific-Asiatic Theatre. He received two battle star medals, the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was a volunteer at Addison Gilbert Hospital and served on the board of directors of the Cape Ann Food Coop and the Personnel Board for the Town of Rockport.

Mr. Martel was also an active member of the Rights of Way Committee for the Town of Rockport, and was a member of the Rockport Art Association, the Thatcher Island Committee, the Sandy Bay Yacht Club, the Sandy Bay Historical Association and the Edward Peterson Post No. 98, Rockport American Legion.

He enjoyed sailing and horses.

Mr. Martel is survived by a son, Christian L. Martel of Rockport; a daughter, Holly Ann Martel of Castiac, Calif.; several nieces and nephews; and cousins Gilbert Martel of California, Inabelle Martel of Connecticut and Sinclair Martel of Washington, D.C.

He was predeceased by two sisters, June A. Roberge and Frances E. Hagarty.
