DANVERS — Rachel May (Spiers) Davis, age 89, wife of the late William
Davis, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, in Danvers following a long
illness.
Born in Boston, the daughter of the late Hugh and Rachel A. (Young)
Spiers, she was raised and educated in Medford, graduating from Medford
High School. A communications student in Boston, her interest included
settlement house work, international students, and animal welfare
organizations.
Mrs. Davis was an active member of the Grace Episcopal Church in
Salem. A compassionate and thoughtful woman, Mrs. Davis also enjoyed
entertaining others (especially children) with her skits and humor. She
and her husband had also enjoyed taking rides in the country.
She is survived by a son, Philip H. "Doc" Davis of Gloucester; a
sister-in-law, Jean Spiers of Wakefield; three nephews, Hugh Spiers of
Arundel, Maine, Henry Spiers of Medford, and Wesley Wilcox of Louisiana;
and a niece, Linda Byam of Wakefield.
She was predeceased by a brother, Henry Spiers and a sister, Marion
Wilcox.
ARRANGEMENTS: A gathering of relatives and friends will be held on
Sunday, Jan. 24 from 2 to 6 p.m. in the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal
St., (corner of Route 114, exit 25A from route 128) Salem. A memorial
service at Grace Episcopal Church, Salem will be held at a time to be
announced. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Cape
