Ronald Ayers Stanton
November 7, 2015
Stanton died on Saturday, November 7, 2015. He fought a courageous seven
year battle with Cortico Basal Syndrome a very painful and unusual form of
From Yuma, Arizona, Ron came to MIT at age 17. He was a member of the class
of 1962. He met his wife, Gloria, in high school and they married in 1961.
They built their new life together in Massachusetts.
An internship his senior year at MIT turned into a career with Hycor in
Woburn, MA. The success of the company gave him the opportunity to retire
before his fiftieth birthday.
He loved movies and any films that were worth seeing he saw first. His taste
in books stopped with fiction. He hiked the Grand Canyon and rafted down the
Colorado River. He spent the last quarter century of his life involved in a
varied number of activities. With his good friend Paul Sylva, he bought a 40
ft. sailboat and he became an avid and competent sailor. It was a long way
from the desert to deep water sailing, but Ron made the most of the
opportunity until hurricanes and illness slowed him down.
He was active through his life with church having taught Sunday School as a
young man, and supporting programs such as the House of the Carpenter in
Boston with time and money during the 1970s. Later he served the Rockport
Chamber Music Festival in its early days. And at the same time he
volunteered with special needs students in the Gloucester Public Schools.
He could enjoy a black tie affair for Julia Child, but his favorite
restaurant served Mexican food and good margaritas. He loved Rockport for
all the things it was….and was not.
He was quietly generous to uncounted folk with a variety of needs. His credo
was that one should always serve without credit and give without expecting
anything in return; he wanted to be anonymous.
His greatest pleasure was his family and the accomplishments of his wife and
sons. He cheered the accomplishments of others. His friends are legion.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Gloria.
