Ruth M. Hendy

Ruth M. (Davis) Hendy, 72, of 92 Marmion Way, Rockport, died Thursday evening, Aug. 13, at the
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, following a brief illness. She was the wife of Kenneth W.
Hendy.
She was born in Hull, Texas, on March 15,1926, to the late Bollie O. and Elizabeth Davis. She was a graduate of the Edna High School in Texas, class of 1943. She earned her bachelor of arts in psychology from Southwestern University, Georgetown, Texas, in 1947.
After teaching at Hartford, Conn., then moving to Gloucester upon her marriage, Mrs.
Hendy resumed teaching in the Rockport and Gloucester public school systems. She later earned her masters in education from Lesley College, and a masters in special education, from Boston College. She also taught during the summer at Gordon College, followed by a summer
term at Harvard.
After, moving to Rockport in 1970, and retiring as school psychologist at, Gloucester High School
in 1986, she enjoyed sailing at Sandy Bay Yacht Club and traveling
internationally in the off season. She and her husband would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 3.
Mrs. Hendy was a past president of Phi Mu Sorority for New England and a member of the
Gloucester Teacher's Association, the Gloucester College Women's Club, the
Appalachian Mountain Club of Boston and enjoyed being a member of the.Sanddy Bay Yacht Club. She was
also a designer for the Folly Cove Designers.
In addition to her husband, Kenneth, she is survived by a daughter, Marcia Handy Somers of
Ipswich; two sons and a daughter in-law, Laurence and Laine (Axelson) Hendy of Medfield and Karl
Hendy of Gloucester; four grandchildren, Christopher and Lauren Hendy of Medfield and Matthew and Jason
Hendy of Gloucester; a sister, Wanda Beckvar of Ganado, Texas; a brother, David Davis of Edna, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, MaryLou Whittley, formerly of Edna, Texas.
A memorial funeral service will be held on Saturday, at 10 a.m., in the First Baptist Church of Gloucester. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. At the family's request, there are no visiting hours.
