Bernard F. "Capt. Ted" Brewer Jr., 73, husband of Helen M.
(Haines) Brewer of 8 Smith Road, Rockport, died yesterday afternoon.
"Capt. Ted" was born in Rockport on Aug. 4, 1924, to the late
Pauline L. (Varney) and Bernard F. Brewer Sr.
He started fishing at the age of 16, hauling lobster traps. In 1942, he
enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II aboard the USS Bunker
Hill, which participated in every major battle in the Pacific. He was
discharged in 1946.
After the war, he worked as a fireman on the Boston and Maine Railroads. He
later worked nights as a die sinker at the Cape Ann Tool Company in Rockport.
Capt. Ted later started his own party boat fishing business out of
Rockport. Over a 50 year period, he owned 11 different boats, including the
Bev, Miss Roclport, and his last boat, Lady Dianne.
Capt. Ted was involved in many different organizations, including a 50-year
member of the Ashler Lodge AF & AM, the Consistory Scottish Rites Bodies,
the Edward Peterson Post No. 98 Rockport American Legion, a former Post Master
of the VFW of Rockport, and also served as a member for many years on the
Rockport Harbor Advisory Board.
In addition to his wife, Helen, to whom he was married for 50 years, he is
survived by a daughter, Dianne B., wife of Charles Gardner Jr., of Rockport; a
grandson, Capt. Matthew Gardner of Rockport; two brothers, William
"Bill" Brewer of Lee, Maine, and Rockport, and Francis P. Brewer of
Rockport; three sisters, Jean, wife of David Cameron, of Rockport, Margaret,
wife of William Jerome, of Newbury, and Pauline, wife of Donald Wallis, of
Marblehead; and many nieces and nephews.
At his request, there will be no visiting hours. A private graveside
service will be held for family and close friends. It is requested that
flowers be omitted.
