Walter S. Priest Jr.

Walter S. Priest Jr., 64, of 31 Lafayette St., died yesterday morning at
Symmes Hospital in Arlington. He was the husband of Lydia (Pallme) Priest.
A journalist and technical writer, he also owned and edited the Rockport
Eagle, a weekly newpaper in Rockport in the 1970s.
He was born in Chicago, Illinois, May 30, 1927, the son of Ruth M. (Biederman)
Priest Korb of Pittsburgh, PA, and the late Dr. Walter S. Priest.
Mr. Priest was a graduate of Northwestern University and received his
master's in government from George Washington University in 1969.
He worked for United Press International and Cowles Publications in
Washington, D.C., after starting out in newspapers as a reporter for the
Chicago City News Bureau.
He became Washington correspondent for The San Juan Star, and was
certified as a White House Correspondent.
Mr. Priest retired from Varion Ion Implant Systems as a senior technical
He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Navy as an aviation electronics
technician's mate. He was awarded the Victory Medal and the American Area
Campaign Medal in honor of his service.
Mr. Priest was a member of the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.,
the Sandy Bay Yacht Club in Rockport, the Unitarian-Universalist Church and
the Boston Computer Society.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two daughters, Nora
Caitlin Priest of Arlington, VA, and Katherine Alistair, wife of Jeffrey P.
Hugel of Rockport; a granddaughter, Caitlin May Hugel of Rockport; three
half-brothers, Dr. Curtis Priest, David Priest and Kenneth Priest, all of
Florida; a step-sister, Theresa Rosano of Florida; and nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held in the Burgess & Mackey Funeral Home,
177 Main St., Rockport, Tuesday at 11 a.m.
The Rev. Edwin Lynn, pastor of the North Shore Unitarian-Universalist
Church of Danvers, will officiate.
Following cremation, his ashes will be scattered at sea.
